Vava

Yanqi Mao (毛衍七), better known by her stage name Vava, is a Chinese singer and rapper under YES MUSIC. She is known for participating on the first season of iQiyi’s rap survival show The Rap of China and being the only female rapper in the final four.



Her stage name Vava comes from the Chinese word baby (娃娃; pronounced wawa) because of her baby face.

• Vava is from Ya’an, Sichuan Province in China.
• Vava grew up with her grandmother and her single mother. Her father passed away when she was young.
• Vava and her family struggled financially. She had to give up attending a professional art school when she was in 5th grade even though she was selected because her family couldn’t affort tuition.
• Vava dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue a music career.
• Her song My New Swag was featured in the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians.
• She has worked with Alexander Wang and Kappa.
• Vava’s biggest musical influences are Jay Chou, Rihanna, and Little Simz.
• On July 31, 2020 Vava announced she was in a relationship with Chinese rapper Kid King.
