Nizi Project is a survival show from JYP Entertainment (JYPE) and Sony Music Entertainment. Their debut is set tentatively for November 2020. The top 14 were chosen from 26 contestants in Season 1. Season 2 showed the participants training towards their debut and decided the 9 members that would be part of the final lineup of the group, NiziU.
The name Nizi comes from the Japanese word "Niji", which means rainbow. Their mission is to "create a group that emits beautiful light with various colors like a rainbow". The goal of the show was to form a new Japanese girl group. Season 1 of the show had a total of 10 episodes and was broadcasted from January 31, 2020 – March 27, 2020; it also became available on YouTube. When each letter of the word NIZI is put together (one letter on top of the other) a square with an X inside is formed (☒ ).
The premise of the show was that each contestant would be given a necklace with 4 hollowed parts and when all the parts are filled, they would have passed and can move on to training. Each of the 4 triangular sections represents an important quality: yellow for dance, red for star power, blue for personality, and green for vocal.
Of the original 14 contestants that participated on the Nizi Project season 2, 5 participants were eliminated: Riria, Akari, Momoka, Suzu, and Yuna.
